Yesterday’s official opening of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for 2012 is estimated to have cost up to R6.5 million.
This was largely due to the logistical arrangements that had to be made for an off-site venue at the University of Tshwane’s Mamelodi campus to host the opening.
Costs included contractors, staff overtime, accommodation, security and transportation. These additional costs could have been avoided if the opening was held at the home of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in Johannesburg.
The Democratic Alliance believes that these millions should rather have been spent on providing much needed services to the residents of Gauteng. The Department of Health for example currently owes millions to suppliers which is resulting in serious supply problems at many of the province’s hospitals.
While it is important to take parliament to the people, with the current state of the province’s finances, the DA questions this excessive and unnecessary expense.
