DA Gauteng Spokesperson for Roads and Transport
The Democratic Alliance welcomes the instruction from Transport Minister Sb’u Ndebele, to SANRAL CEO, Nazir Alli, to release all documents pertaining to the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) and the proposed Open Road Tolling (ORT).
As long ago as October 2011 the DA made application to SANRAL for full disclosure of this information under the Promotion of Access to Information Act. This resulted in SANRAL verbally stating that they would require payment of about R1 million for the cost of providing this information. They agreed to show DA representatives the documents and after meeting with SANRAL officials the DA was shown a room full of documents but not given access to any of the information .
This attempt to keep public information “private” was duplicated yesterday when Alli disingenuously handed over heavily censored documents to Cosatu’s Zwelinzima Vavi after promising in a TV debate to reveal all documents.
At last we will be in a position to find out exactly who is making all the money on the GFIP and ORT and why the Gauteng motorist is being financially milked by SANRAL.
We will study the documentation with a fine toothcomb.
