Thomas Walters MPL
DA Gauteng Spokesperson for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs
The DA in Gauteng welcomes the call by Water Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa, for a collective effort by all South Africans to solve the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) emergency.
It echoes similar calls made by the DA and various environmental groups since 2009.
The Minister also calls for solutions to be tabled. Once again, it is a call that is not new and hopefully made with a full awareness of the solutions that have been proposed for years.
The problem with AMD is not the absence of a desire for a collective effort or possible solutions, but rather a lack of meaningful action and commitment of resources to the problem.
Hopefully the Minister will back up her call by immediately leading a clear, open and participative process rapidly developing solutions and instantly implementing them.
Time is a luxury we do not have as we can already see with the continuous destruction of the Tweelopiespruit that flows through the Krugersdorp game reserve.
The Minister must act rather than talk.
