GAUTENG PAYS R612M IN LEGAL CASES

Statement by Jack Bloom MPL

DA Gauteng Caucus Leader

The Gauteng Provincial Government paid out R612 million in legal settlements last year.

This was revealed by the Premier’s Office at a meeting last Friday (16 March) of the Gauteng Legislature’s Oversight Committee on the Premier’s Office.

Gauteng departments faced 450 legal claims last year, losing 48 cases in court, winning 39 cases, and settling in 71 cases.

The Gauteng Finance Department made the biggest payout of R280 500 000, comprising R279 million paid for the termination of the Sibize Call Centre and R1.5 million involving Standard Bank.

The Roads and Transport Department paid out R183 million and the Infrastructure Development Department paid R120 million.

The Gauteng Health Department lost all ten medical negligence cases in court, and had to pay out R16.9 million. This is of great concern as there are many other negligence cases that could result in huge payouts.

There are 304 pending cases that could see more payouts that drain the provincial government.

It’s an indication of poor governance that is costing the taxpayer dearly.
