LEADER OF THE DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE IN THE KWAZULU-NATAL LEGISLATURE/PROVINCIAL LEADER OF THE DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE
THE election of former Msunduzi Deputy Mayor and Speaker, Alpha Shelembe this weekend, as chairman of the Moses Mabhida ANC region incorporating Pietermartizburg, raises very serious questions around the party’s commitment to good governance.
The selection of Shelembe, who is set to stand trial on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering in June, is a slap in the face for ratepayers of this region. This is the same man who, just a short while ago, was at the forefront of the Msunduzi municipality when total maladministration almost brought it to its knees. Shelembe’s election makes him eligible for any position within local government, which begs the question – what does the ANC think it is doing? Either party officials have a very short memory or else they don’t give a damn how the broader public may feel.
The DA believes that the appointment of Alpha Shelembe to a position of power is reckless while also setting a dangerous precedent in terms of good governance within our province.
