R59 Intersection: Authorities Could Have Prevented Losses

Roy Jankielsohn

DA Leader in the Free State

The DA welcomes the announcement by authorities that the R 59 Intersection near Sasolburg will at last receive the necessary attention (Volksblad, 3 April 2012).

Local communities have regarded the intersection as the ‘crossing of death” for several years.

However, if the Free State authorities considered the various request and letters from the DA (see attached) and the affected communities, the numerous lives that were lost as a result of the unsafe circumstances at the intersection could have been prevented.

It is the responsibility of our municipalities, as well as provincial and national government, to ensure that our residents are safe on Free State roads.

A reluctance to ensure safe roads creates the impression that government simply does not care for our citizens’ road safety.
