Only 511 (24%) of the 2100 schools in Gauteng have functioning science laboratories.

This is revealed in a written reply to my questions by Gauteng MEC for Education Barbara Creecy.

According to data by the National Department of Basic Education, the proportion of schools in Gauteng with stocked laboratories fell drastically from 42% to 14% between 2006 and 2011.

In her reply, however, MEC Creecy claims to have no knowledge of this information from the National Basic Education Department on the decline of stocked laboratories at Gauteng schools.

The DA is extremely concerned about the Gauteng Education Department’s failure to provide necessary resources to learners in the province. The majority of learners are only exposed to theoretical knowledge due to dysfunctional laboratories, which makes it very difficult to pursue and excel in subjects such as physical science and biology.

Science education is critical for the economy and will assist matriculants to find jobs.

The Gauteng Education Department must act urgently to ensure that Gauteng schools have functional laboratories.
