THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the announcement that Durban’s old airport site has been sold to Transnet and is to be developed as a dig-out port – a move which will greatly enhance the province’s prospects of becoming the gateway to Africa.
Government’s spending money only in Couga, where road, rail and harbour capacity do not exist, makes no sense and it is gratifying to see that Durban is finally being recognised for the role it can play as the closest major port city to Gauteng. The DA believes that the development of the site must be expedited if KwaZulu-Natal is to begin reaching its economic potential – a matter which the provincial government will have to drive hard. Also crucial to the success of this massive project is the implementation of special economic zones for maritime projects, along with the petrol and chemical industries.
