IS SELEBI GETTING PREFERENTIAL MEDICAL TREATMENT?

Statement by Jack Bloom MPL

DA Gauteng Health Spokesman

Jailed former police commissioner Jackie Selebi may be getting unjustified preferential treatment for his kidney ailment at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

This emerges as Gauteng Health MEC Ntombi Mekgwe ducked my question on this issue yesterday in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

She cited patient confidentiality, but did disclose that 82 patients are currently on the waiting list for kidney dialysis at the Steve Biko Hospital.

She also would not disclose if there were younger patients on this list who would normally get preference in receiving dialysis. A patient over 60 years old would not normally get dialysis if there were younger patients who are candidates for a kidney transplant.

Many people die every day because they cannot get kidney dialysis.

I will be asking further questions to find out the ages of other patients on the waiting list and why Mr Selebi appears to be getting preferential treatment over them.
