THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal can reveal that no less than four luxury vehicles, used as part of a travelling ANC centenary jamboree, have exactly the same licence plates – “ANC 100 – ZN” – in direct violation of the South African Road Traffic Act.
The vehicles, which appear on Facebook (titled ANC centenary celebration. #Next level#), include Audi’s and Mercedes convertibles which are being paraded around the province, ostensibly in a show of the party’s wealth and power. In the photographs, the same licence plate is evident on all of the cars. Astoundingly, in one of the photographs, a traffic officer is seen casually surveying the cars as they pass by. Either he is simply unaware of the laws which govern his profession – a sad indictment – or else he truly believes that the drivers of these vehicles or the ANC are above the law.
The DA views the incident as further evidence of provincial cabinet’s inability to separate state from party and how the goalposts are moved to accommodate those within the party’s elite clique. We remain concerned about the Premier’s silence over whether government funds are being used to fund ANC centenary celebrations in this province and will be calling on him again to confirm that this is not the case.
