Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature
KZN Premier, Zweli Mkhize must act immediately to dispel concerns that provincial Speaker, Peggy Nkonyeni and MEC, Mike Mabuyakhulu – both implicated in the “Three Amigo’s” scam – may not face trial.
According to a media report, the NPA is currently reviewing the decision to prosecute the two senior KwaZulu-Natal ANC politicians who stand accused of racketeering, fraud and money-laundering. The DA believes that any attempt to have the charges against Nkonyeni and Mabuyakhulu dropped would be grossly inappropriate and a clear case of justice being practiced selectively. Just like anyone else accused of a crime, they must have their day in court. It is inconceivable that these two individuals remain in high office, particularly when all of the other accused have either retired, resigned or been dismissed and the DA repeats its call to the Premier to suspend both pending the outcome of the trial.
The DA expects the Premier to clarify whether talks have indeed taken place around the possibility of either party being let off the hook and to set the record straight. We will continue to monitor developments in a bid to ensure that justice is upheld.
