Cry the Beloved Children

Patricia Mokgohlwa

DA Gauteng Spokesperson for Gender, Youth and People with Disabilities

In response to the article “Teko jail threat over defaulting” published in the Pretoria News 10/5/2012, I remind all parents that do not pay maintenance that your actions negatively affect your children’s standard of living and their opportunities in life .

Teko Modise is not above the law and needs to pay his child maintenance, or face contempt of court and jail.

Many parents experience problems in claiming maintenance, and maintenance orders are unfortunately often not enforced. This needs to change! The responsibility of absent parents needs to be encouraged with regard to the well-being of their children.

Gauteng should follow the lead of the DA run Western Cape Provincial Government in publicising the names of defaulters (“name and shame”), as well as arrests at roadblocks.
