Only 88.3 million (52%) of a planned target of 168 million male condoms were distributed in Gauteng in the 2011/12 financial year due to problems with the national condom tender.
This was revealed at a Health Committee meeting this week in the Gauteng Legislature.
The situation was even worse with female condoms, with only one-third (600 000) delivered of the 1.8 million that were planned.
The targets this year are higher – 214 million male condoms and 2.7 million female condoms.
It is outrageous that tender bungling has led to a serious condom shortage.
The tenders must be sorted out speedily so that enough condoms are available for people in Gauteng to practice safe sex.
