DA Gauteng Social Development spokesperson
An abandoned baby found yesterday in a storm water drain in Marabastad Pretoria, again highlights my call for an effective strategy to be put in place to reduce the number of abandoned babies.
This is the second abandoned baby found in Pretoria in the past few days. Many of these cases are not even reported so the figures released by the Department do not stress the urgency for immediate intervention.
Gauteng Social Development department spokesman, Sello Mokoena, stated in the media today that the Department is only aware of ten abandoned baby cases a year. This is alarming as the Johannesburg Child Welfare alone contradicts this statement as they claim to receive nine abandoned babies a month.
Once again I call on the Department to initiate an urgent survey to find out why so many young women have unwanted pregnancies and what can best be done to prevent them.
This is a tragic epidemic and all stakeholders must try and prevent unwanted pregnancies in order to drastically reduce the numbers of abandoned babies.
