Seventy four learners were expelled from Gauteng schools in 2011, up from eleven in 2010. So far twenty seven have already been expelled this year.

This was revealed by Gauteng Education MEC, Barbara Creecy, in a written reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature. (The reply is available from the media office on request.)

The MEC cites possession of illegal substances, use of illegal substances, possession of dangerous weapons, assault, sexual assault and theft as some of the reasons for expulsion.

It concerns me that the necessary preventative support structures in schools aimed at assisting troubled learners have not been put in place. Schools need to identify students in need of support early on, before their behaviour deteriorates and puts others students safety at risk.

Together with social support structures schools need to prevent this sort of behaviour before it is too late.
