MUNICIPALITY OWED MORE THAN R2 BILLION IN UNPAID RATES

The Emfuleni local municipality in Gauteng is owed more than R2.5 billion in unpaid rates and services. (See table below.)

This was revealed by Gauteng Local Government and Housing MEC, Humphrey Mmemezi, in a written reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.

A Gauteng legislature portfolio committee has been told by the municipality that there is no billing system.

I am deeply concerned that the Gauteng government has failed in its service delivery to yet another municipality in the province.

Emfuleni municipality has been plagued by municipal billing problems since last year.

The Department needs to intervene immediately before more service delivery protests erupt throughout this area.

*Note: Emfuleni comprises Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging, Sebokeng, and Evaton.
