R62 MILLION UNDERSPEND ON SOCIAL PROGRAMMES IN FOURTH QUARTER

Hendrika Kruger, MPL

DA Gauteng Social Development spokesperson

The Gauteng Social Development department under spent almost R62 million on crucial social programmes in the period January to March 2012.

This was revealed in the Gauteng Social Development department’s fourth quarterly report.

The significantly under spent programmes are:

Substance Abuse and Treatment R8 933 000 – (11% of the budget)

Crime prevention R42 000 000 – (20% of the budget)

Victim empowerment R4 300 000 – (10% of the budget)

Youth development R6 200 000 – (43% of the budget)

This is a disgrace. In a province plagued by social ills and crime it is completely unacceptable that R61 433 000 was made available to deal with these issues but not used.

I receive endless communication from Gauteng social welfare centres desperate for funds yet the Department is mismanaging the allocated resources.

I call for an investigation into the mismanagement of finances of the Gauteng Social Development and why almost R63 million was under spent on vital social programmes.
