The Democratic Alliance welcomes the announcement made by Premier Magashule yesterday in the media that all RDP houses in the Province would be completed by the end of the year. The DA will monitor this very closely and see if the Premier lives up to his word.
We are concerned that the Premier said that few new houses will be built this year. The Premier will need to explain what the R1,0 billion allocated for housing for this current financial year will be spent on. Surely the total budget for two years cannot be spent on one year’s housing allocation?
We are well aware that material to the value of R350 million was purchased and “dumped” all over the province – a large amount of this material has already disappeared.
The DA is also concerned that a large number of contractors and suppliers have not been paid and the Premier should set a deadline as to when contractors and suppliers will be paid.
As far as the poor work is concerned – we have heard it all before and nothing changes. A number of years ago MEC Mafereka was going to blacklist all the contractors that did not deliver good houses and nothing came of that so I do not expect too much to come from the Premiers statement that poor work by contractors will not be tolerated.
The DA will monitor the progress made by the this department in completing all the houses and paying all the suppliers and contractors.
