The DA has called on Education MEC Reginah Mhaule to cancel the Department’s multi-million rand contract with EduSolutions for the supply of teaching material and stationery to Mpumalanga schools.
The government’s own legal opinion provided by Advocate pat Ellis has shown the EduSolutions contract to be unconstitutional in its current form.
The contract allows EduSolutions to pocket massive amounts of money by getting free licence to negotiate discounts with suppliers.
The Department is planning to massively inflate their teaching material and stationery budget to R411 million in 2013 from which EduSolutions stands to benefit significantly.
At the same time, the Department is claiming it has no money to buy additional textbooks to top-up supplies at schools in 2013.
This is despite Premier David Mabuza’s admission that schoolchildren face a dire shortage of books in the province.
The current contract is structured to allow EduSolutions to keep 60% of all discounts negotiated – money the Department could use to buy books and pay teachers if it dealt with suppliers directly.
Schoolchildren should not have to suffer through book shortages because of the Education Department’s dodgy dealings. The MEC must cancel the EduSolutions contract without delay.
