DA Invites Premier to Visit Botshabelo

James Masango MPL

Provincial Chief Whip of the Official Opposition.

The DA has formally invited premier David Mabuza to a joint visit to the neglected Botshabelo heritage site outside Middelburg. Last week, the DA wrote a letter to the premier requesting him to diarise a date to accompany us, and experience first-hand the decay of this once famed heritage site.

During a meeting on 3 July the premier was shocked at our description of the utter decay of Botshabelo. He immediately undertook to accompany us on a visit to the area, and committed government’s support to save this important part of Mpumalanga’s cultural heritage from complete collapse.

To this end, we hope that premier Mabuza will realise the urgency of the matter, and commit to a visit as soon as possible to prevent the theft and loss of unsecured historical artefacts.

The DA believes that Botshabelo and the surrounding area enjoy an immense potential for job creation and economic growth. While hardly any tourists and visitors go there now, the growth opportunities are boundless. We also hope that the premier will use the visit to meet with all stakeholders concerned, thus convening a mini-summit, and pave the way for public and private economic opportunities.

An intervention in Botshabelo will not only rescue an important part of Mpumalanga’s heritage from complete collapse, but offers ample opportunity at reconciliation, redress and equal economic participation.
