The DA welcomes the ruling by the North Gauteng High Court today upholding its July 10 order compelling the Gert Sibande District Municiaplity and Chief Albert Luthuli local municipality to provide sufficient potable water to residents of Carolina, Caro park and Silobela.
While granting both municipalities leave to appeal, judge NM Mavundla found Carolina’s water unfit for human consumption, and that both the district and local municipalities must provide communities with potable water, with immediate effect. The municipalities were also ordered to provide the court with a detailed plan for water provision within 30 days.
This ruling upholds the constitutional rights of citizens over those of government, and the DA welcomes the fact that local government’s arrogance – especially when serving the needs of the people – has been dealt a severe blow.
