Schools continue to return incorrect orders of workbooks for learners to the Education Department warehouse in the Port Elizabeth district.
A Democratic Alliance (DA) inspection of the warehouse today (subs: Wednesday, 11 July) discovered hundreds of boxes returning to the premises due to the Education Department’s ordering of books in the wrong languages for learner’s in the district.
We also witnessed workbooks meant for the 1st and 2nd quarter being returned by schools, meaning many children have gone the entire year without these books.
We were informed by the Department that about 500 boxes of workbooks in English to address some of the book shortages. This is not nearly enough though to deal with the crisis that the Education Department has created for schoolchildren.
From our visit today it is clear that schools will not have the 3rd and 4th quarter workbooks they need when the new term starts on 16 July.
The DA will demand answers from the Education MEC on what guarantees they will offer children and their parents about when these books will be delivered.
