DA Gauteng Community Safety Spokesperson
Gauteng is emerging as the biggest producer of methamphetamine, or tik, with its use rapidly on the rise in Johannesburg and Pretoria. According to The Times this morning the prevalence of the drug is increasing, especially in the suburbs of Eersterus, Laudium, and Lenasia.
The Gauteng provincial government must arrest this trend before it becomes a crisis. It needs to craft a comprehensive inter-departmental strategy to combat increasing substance abuse and production in the province.
I will write to the MEC for Community Safety Ms Faith Mazibuko urging her to back the call by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Western Cape Community Safety Minister Dan Plato to reinstate the Narcotics Bureau within the police to co-ordinate an integrated response to drug related crimes.
The provincial government should not allow tik and other drugs to spread across Gauteng destroying lives and tearing families and communities apart.
Gauteng cannot afford an international reputation as the world’s tik hub. According to the recent UN Office on Drugs and Crime, South Africa is already one of the biggest players in the region in the manufacture of tik.
