Hawks confirm Lamola investigation
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) has confirmed that investigations into the criminal charges, laid by the Democratic Alliance (DA), against ANCYL Deputy President Ronald Lamola, are ongoing. Captain SM Aphane, who is the appointed investigating officer on the case, paid a visit to the DA’s Provincial Head Office this morning.
Cpt Aphane confirmed that the case has been referred to the Hawks, where he is located and that he will be conducting the investigation. The SAPS is currently gathering evidence in the matter.
During our meeting, Cpt Aphane clarified the confusion surrounding the case, after I received several conflicting SMSes from the SAPS’ automated SMS service. In these messages, the investigating officer changed several times and the case was allocated two separate case numbers at two different police stations.
The DA laid the charges against Lamola on 24 June 2012, for his statements calling for war against farmers and “anarchy” and “ungovernability” in Mpumalanga in general due to the state of service delivery in the province.
The DA will continue to work with and provide our support to the authorities throughout their investigations and will closely monitor the progress made in this case.
We firmly believe that Lamola has a case to answer and that he must learn that comments, such as those made by him, have no place in South Africa’s democratic society.
