Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga
The Democratic Alliance in Mpumalanga will write to provincial police commissioner Thulani Ntobela to clarify why the SAPS are creating confusion around criminal charges against ANC Youth League Deputy President, Ronald Lamola.
Since the DA laid charges of incitement to violence against Mr Lamola on 24 June, the police have changed the investigating officer four times. There are also now two separate case numbers at two different police stations relating to the Lamola charges.
The DA first laid the charges against Mr Lamola for statements calling for war against farmers and “anarchy” and “ungovernability” in Mpumalanga in general, due to the state of service delivery in the province.
The juggling of the case details by the police are recorded in SMSes sent to my cell phone from the SAPS’s automated case information service.
In one morning, the police created two case numbers at two different police stations, Middelburg and KwaMhlanga – both with the same investigating officer.
Shortly after, the investigating officer at KwaMhlanga station changed three times in one week.
Commissioner Ntobela must explain whether the SAPS is confused about how to investigate these charges, or whether they are intentionally creating confusion in a bid to smother the case against Mr Lamola.
