A special sitting has been called by the Gauteng Legislature to consider a report by the Privileges and Ethics Committee on embattled Local Government and Housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi.

This committee will base its report and recommendations on an investigation by the Legislature’s Integrity Commissioner Ralph Mgijima into allegations of credit card misspending by Mmmemezi and misleading the House in his replies to questions about an accident with his official vehicle in KwaZulu-Natal last year.

It’s likely to be an unlucky Friday the 13th for Mmemezi as he faces sanctions that could include a rebuke by the Speaker and five days without pay.

The Legislature does not have the power to fire Mmemezi, but an adverse ruling will heighten the pressure on Premier Nomvula Mokonyane to boot him out of office.

It’s now 49 days as recorded by the DA’s Mmemisi Monitor (see ) since his misspending on his government credit card was revealed, including buying a R10 000 painting at a McDonald’s restaurant.

More allegations have since been made about irregular activities when he worked for the Mogale City municipality.

Mmemezi’s days are numbered. He is a complete embarrassment to the provincial government.

The sooner he goes the better.
