Anthony Benadie MPL
Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza this morning declared his, the ANC’s, and provincial government’s unconditional endorsement of the implementation of the youth wage subsidy in Mpumalanga, and that it should be implemented as soon as possible.
During the course of our meeting with the premier, he expressed his agreement on the importance of the youth wage subsidy as a means to address the ever increasing youth unemployment rate in the province.
We also discussed a number of sectors and industries where the implementation of the Youth Wage Subsidy would stimulate job creation and economic growth in Mpumalanga, and the role the establishment of the Mpumalanga University would play in this regard.
We agreed on the basic premise of the subsidy and what it would mean to employers and employees alike, and also discussed COSATU’s opposition to the implementation of the subsidy at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC).
To this end, premier Mabuza undertook to urge all stakeholders in NEDLAC and COSATU to acknowledge the critical levels of youth unemployment, and to agree to implement the subsidy as soon as possible. We share the concerns expressed by the premier over the slow pace of negotiations, and commit ourselves to work with the premier and the Mpumalanga provincial government to place NEDLAC and COSATU under the required pressure, to ensure the speedy conclusion of the discussion to implement the youth wage subsidy.
The DA acknowledges the significance of yet another premier endorsing our call for the youth wage subsidy, and appreciates the openness and spirit within which premier Mabuza discussed the subsidy and its implementation with us.
We will not rest until the subsidy is implemented and employment opportunities for our province’s youth are created.
