James Masango MPL
Provincial Chief Whip of the Official Opposition.
The DA has learnt that Premier David Mabuza intends to hand over 16 houses tomorrow to people who pledge their support to the ANC in the Thembisile, Hani and Dr JS Moroka municipalities.
The houses will be handed over to beneficiaries identified by ANC branches in the area.
These hand-outs appear to be part of a trend given that the Premier was doing precisely the same thing in Emalahleni, Witbank, two weeks ago.
Last month the Premier visited two municipalities and promised community members that he will build and provide furnished houses and giving them to beneficiaries identified by ANC branch members.
The Premier is intent on blurring the line between party and state while thousands of people wait for years on housing lists. Some beneficiaries have been waiting since 1996.
Instead of behaving in a way that is fitting of the highest office in the province
The DA is concerned with the manner in which the Premier implies it is the ANC who provides houses and not the government.
The progressive right to housing is enshrined in the Constitution. It is the state’s obligation to use the resources available to realise this right.
The DA will write to the Premier and ask who these companies are, how beneficiaries are identified and what the cost to build these houses is.
