The Gauteng Education Department must forge a solid partnership with local and provincial law enforcement agencies to conduct regular inspections of learner transport.
The once-off inspection of school transport done by Education MEC Barbara Creecy yesterday painted a terrifying picture. It was found that 203 of the 485 buses tested were unroadworthy. These vehicles place the lives of Gauteng learners at risk.
The MEC must ensure that regular inspections are conducted to remove all unroadworthy vehicles from the roads. The annual inspections currently undertaken are a welcome improvement, but simply not enough to prevent accidents and protect the learners of Gauteng.
Anything less than quarterly roadworthy tests for school buses amounts to gambling with the lives of our children.
