Urgent Intervention Needed In Bushbuckridge Water Supply Crisis

Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga

It has come to the DA’s attention that large parts of Bushbuckridge have been without water since Sunday, because striking Bushbuckridge Water Board employees have switched off the main water pumps.

The DA absolutely condemns this illegal act, and calls on the SAPS to arrest those striking workers preventing the pumps from being switched back on for trespassing and sabotage. Additional police officers have to be deployed to protect water installations, and to do so as a matter of urgency.

Furthermore, the Bushbuckridge Water Board has to coordinate with police, and restart pumps as soon as water installations have been secured. In the meantime, it should implement emergency contingency plans to provide residents with water. If it is unable to do so, it should liaise with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs for assistance.

Water supply to Bushbuckridge is absolutely critical, especially when viewed in the light of the many recent violent protests in the area over water.

Mpumalanga cannot afford to have its security compromised further.
