THE Democratic Alliance calls on KZN COGTA MEC, Nomusa Dube, to issue a warning to ANC-led municipalities in the province that they are expected to conduct their council business in good faith and without prejudice to non-ANC councillors.
The request comes after recent attempts to undermine and discredit two DA councillors in the province.
Jabulani Chiya is an elected councillor in Ward 18 of uMzimkulu. Yet this municipality’s ANC Speaker and councillors have deliberately undermined him by failing to issue him with an official council stamp – a necessity for the proper performance of his duties – and then sending letters to various banks, listing ANC councillor K Mgcwaba as ward councillor.
In Ward 27 of eThekwini the Premier’s office held an event on 8 September yet failed to officially notify Ward councillor, Martin Meyer. To add insult to injury, ANC councillor Nhlapo was allegedly paraded as a ward councillor at the same event. The DA is deeply concerned by the discriminatory attitudes shown. The ANC must adhere to and respect the will of the electorate in the province. They must also respect and acknowledge elected opposition councillors.
We expect the MEC to take a hard line against any official that fails to abide by the rules.
