Commissioner Must Investigate Sleeping Ermelo Police

Anthony Benadie MPL

DA Mpumalanga Leader

The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Thulani Ntobela must immediately investigate police officials and the station commander of the Ermelo Police Station for negligence and their failure to perform their prescribed duties.

This follows numerous readers’ complaints to local newspapers about police not responding to calls, or sleeping while on duty. This morning the DA received photos from a concerned member of the public who discovered the sleeping officials on August 22, while wanting to report a burglary at his home.

The DA absolutely condemns such negligence as Ermelo has been in the throes of a particularly devastating crime wave lately – and will not be surprised at all that criminals long ago realised that police are asleep at night, giving them free reign to rob, rape and kill as they please.

The DA will today write to Lt Gen Ntobela and ask him to launch an investigation into policing in Ermelo. We will also insist that the station commander as well as the entire shift on duty on that particular night be suspended, and charged with and investigated negligence, dereliction of duty and gross misconduct.

The citizens of South Africa enjoy the protection of the Constitution, and police have been given the mandate to ensure the safety and security of all. An example must be made of lazy and incompetent officials who tarnish the efforts of others in uniform who have dedicated their lives to protect their fellow countrymen.
