DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Development
The DA in Gauteng welcomes the recommendation adopted by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature that all outstanding management plans for provincial nature reserves should be decided upon as a matter of urgency.
This recommendation was adopted as part of the portfolio committee on agriculture and rural development’s oversight report on the department’s first quarterly report and has the strength of a formal resolution. This follows intense lobbying by the DA in the portfolio committee and the legislature to turn around decaying or under-utlilised nature reserves in Gauteng. The resolution calls for a progress report by the deadline of 15 October.
The problems facing conservation in Gauteng are well illustrated in relation to the Suikerborsrand nature reserve in the Vaal Triangle that is threatened by decay due to the absence of service providers being appointed, as well as being threatened by a proposed open cast mine in the vicinity.
The DA regards this as a step forward by the provincial government and will keep a close eye on whether this resolution is acted upon.
