Today, hundreds of local residents attended the Democratic Alliance’s Jobs Imbizo in Alexandra. As we look back over the past 18 years of democracy, we realise that South Africa still remains a country of insiders and outsiders. Alexandra is no exception to this as an area where most residents still live in abject poverty; unemployed and without skills.

We are here today to tell you that there is hope and that the DA has a plan to break down the barriers that keep so many of you locked out of opportunity. South Africa is a land of multi-talented and innovative people. The DA’s plan for jobs and growth will ensure that all South African’s are given a chance to become active participants in the economy.

The DA has plans for a very different future for South Africa and that is why we are working for change, and working for jobs. Our plan is to grow the economy at a rate of 8% a year, thereby lifting millions of people out of poverty.

Unemployment in South Africa is a harsh reality for far too many people. Just yesterday, the Star newspaper reported a story where 10 000 people queued for 30 municipal learnerships in Durban, without a guarantee of work if they were accepted. This desperately sad situation highlighted the extent of the unemployment crisis in South Africa.

Today, the DA has gathered recruitment agencies, HR firms, career guidance counsellors and others to provide knowledge and tips to the youth of Alexandra on how to make themselves more competitive in the job market. This is just one of the ways we are working together towards a better future for South Africa.

Improving education, implementing the Youth Wage Subsidy, building a nation of entrepreneurs and improving infrastructure are some of the other ways the DA plans to drastically turn around South Africa’s economy. The people of Alexandra and greater South Africa deserve nothing less.

Where the DA is in government in the Western Cape, and other municipalities around the country, we are already creating growth and jobs. In the DA-governed Western Cape, we have implemented the work and skills programme, which has provided skills development and work opportunities to over 3000 young people.

Even closer to home, we are creating growth and jobs in our very own DA-governed Midvaal municipality in Gauteng. Midvaal has already achieved 8% economic growth by implementing the key elements of the DA’s plan since taking over the municipality in 2000. With this achievement, the DA-run council cut unemployment rates to under 10% by the 2008/2009 financial year.

The reality is that Midvaal has sent out the message that it is “Open for Business”, and businesses are responding with increased investment and job-creation. Within Gauteng the DA-run Midvaal municipality has achieved a competitive advantage by being the most attractive location for business to invest and reap the benefits of minimal red-tape, quality services, excellent infrastructure and a number of initiatives designed to provide the skills to match the demand.

Should the DA be voted into Provincial government in Gauteng in 2014, we would replicate this blueprint across the province, thereby opening up opportunities and creating jobs.

We have a plan for change. We have a plan for jobs! Together we can!
