The Gauteng Health Department owes R47.8 million to municipalities in Gauteng.
This is revealed in a written reply by Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo in a written reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.
Johannesburg is owed the most by far – R31.8 million, followed by Tshwane which is owed R7.6 million.
Other amounts owing are as follows:
* Ekurhuleni – R2.7 million
* Eskom – R2.3 million
* Eskom Carletonville – R591 000
* Mogale City – R1.5 million
* Emfuleni – R801 000
* Lesedi – R170 200
* Merafong – R9517
R9.2 million of this is owed for more than 60 days.
The total amount owing may be higher than this as according to Papo it “is in respect of services where invoices have been processed and is awaiting cash release. Where invoices are in dispute with the municipality, these invoices will not be processed until the dispute is resolved.”
It’s very unfair that the Gauteng Health Department does not pay its municipal debts promptly. Local councils face huge budget problems that would be eased if government departments pay up.
