Local Government MEC Ntombi Mekgwe’s department has given contradictory information regarding demarcation of local authorities in Sedibeng, in South Gauteng. This includes the future of both Emfuleni and the DA-run Midvaal local municipality.
In her reply to the DA’s question in the Legislature today the MEC was determined not to provide clarity on the matter and refused to declare whether she was in favour of collapsing the smaller local authorities into a megacity or not. This uncertainty threatens to paralyze development in the area and people could lose jobs.
The ANC did state outright that it wishes to abolish District Councils, which the DA supports.
The DA believes that smaller government is generally better. Where local circumstances permit, smaller, stand-alone councils are better at delivering services because less money is swallowed up by a huge bureaucracy. More money is therefore available to supply services.
Smaller councils are cheaper to run, and lower taxes make more money available for incentivising investment and promoting job creation.
The DA in Gauteng will continue to oppose efforts to abolish these smaller municipalities and any attempts at undermining direct, responsive and accessible local government.
