Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo and his department must urgently address the growing linen and hygiene crisis at Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, Tshwane.
The state of sanitation facilities at the public hospital is not only disgusting, but also pose a significant health risk to patients, staff and visitors.
I have also been informed that there is a significant shortage of clean linen at this hospital, in part because the laundry machine has been broken for the past year. A patient admitted yesterday for a serious surgical procedure was informed that there are no blankets or pillows.
A matron at the hospital indicated that they have a linen problem at Kalafong, receiving clean linen only once or twice a week. The linen crisis was denied by the Chief Matron, but she conceded problems with blanket and pillow shortages when asked about this specifically.
It is unacceptable that patients – many who are already short on adequate blankets, pillows and linen at home – have to provide their own and then have to endure filthy facilities that further threaten their health.
