A reply to a Democratic Alliance parliamentary question in the National Assembly has revealed that a company linked to Limpopo’s Premier, Mr. Mathale was awarded a lease deal by the National Department of Public Works without going to tender. This lease agreement was only a negotiated deal.
This opens up the whole government lease process to abuse as political connections often outweigh financial considerations.
The “negotiated” lease for the building occupied by the Department of Home Affairs will earn Manaka Properties (whose shareholders include Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale, the former Chairman of the Limpopo Tender Board Jannie Moolman, and the current Chairman of the National Assembly Finance Committee, Thaba Mufamadi) a tidy R265 million over the lease period.
Our Premier is known to hold directorships in a number of companies which do business with government. This makes the whole system suspect, especially if deals such the one Manaka Properties received are not done through an open tender system.
The DA colleagues at National will propose the review of the entire process of awarding government lease without being opened to tender processes.
