Khume Ramulifho MPL
DA Gauteng Education Spokesperson
This morning I visited a recycling depot at Elandsfontein in Ekurhuleni following a tip off from community members who witnessed learning materials being destroyed there.
The DA can confirm that the recycling company is destroying textbooks, workbooks, lesson plans and school book catalogues.
The boxes are marked for Isando in Ekurhuleni and Kwazulu Natal. However, it is unknown whether the national or provincial Education Department is responsible for this situation.
There are hundreds of textbooks, workbooks and other resources for grade 2, 3, 5 and 11 in wrapped boxes which are in the process of being destroyed at this recycling company.
It is unacceptable for a country with an education crisis to destroy textbooks and workbooks.
The DA will write to both the Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy and Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga to get clarity on why learning and teaching materials are being destroyed, and what action their respective departments intend to take.
