REPORTS that charges of corruption and racketeering have been formally dropped against KZN Speaker Peggy Nkonyeni, provincial government MEC, Mike Mabuyakhulu and several others do not come as a surprise.
It is several weeks since an announcement was made that the province’s acting director of public prosecutions, Moipone Noko intended withdrawing the charges. As the DA, we still want to know why and we believe that every citizen of this province deserves an answer to this question too.
The DA is committed to obtaining the NPA records of decision in the case of Nkonyeni and Mabuyakhulu. We are not deterred despite our initial request for these documents being turned down and have submitted a formal Public Access to Information Application (PAIA). The NPA has acknowledged receipt of the application and now has 30 working days to respond.
We will know exactly where we stand by mid-November. Should the DA fail to receive the records of decision from the NPA, we will be forced to consider our options.
