Letter of Respect for Alf Khumalo

DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Arts and Culture

Bidding farewell is always sad, even more so when the farewell is permanent and for someone who profoundly influenced your perception of the world as the late Alf Kumalo did. A photographer of rare skill, Bra Alf has left us a record of the tumultuous times through which he and so many of us lived.

He overcame the limits of his humble origins to become a chronicler par excellence of a society in conflict, change and development. His images were seared less on his filmstock, than on our consciousness as a society. If a picture is worth a thousand words, Alf Khumalo’s stories will be told many times over, and for many generations to come.

And for our part, as South Africans, we have lost a gifted teller of our national story. The DA in Gauteng sends its deepest condolences and sympathies to all of Alf’s family and friends.
