DA calls for investigation into policing in Ermelo

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thulani Ntobela needs to take drastic steps against the station commander and police officers at the Ermelo Police Station for yet again failing to carry out their duties and gross misconduct.

The DA’s call follows after a report in the local media of police failing to respond to an attempted burglary De Bruin Park, despite numerous calls to the police station and the complainant eventually driving there himself to fetch police officers.

The DA is extremely concerned by this behaviour, as across our country dedicated police officers put their lives on the line to protect the citizenry. Yet, among certain officials in Ermelo it appears that the safety and security of the public is not a priority at all, and more of an inconvenience than anything else.

The DA believes that policing will only be effective when the command structure is effective, and to that end, the command structure in Ermelo warrants close inspection. Why is it that the station and shift commanders allow for such a lackadaisical approach to policing? Why is it that sector and division commanders are so out of touch with police stations under their command that this sort of behaviour becomes a norm?

Ultimately the responsibility rests with Lt Gen Ntobela, and he needs to exercise his command, head for Ermelo and sort out this mess. To this end the DA will write to both Lt Gen Ntobela as well as community safety, security and liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe asking them to investigate the conduct of all officers concerned, and take the necessary action.

Thousands upon thousands of residents need the reassurance that the SAPS regard their personal safety as a top priority, that the streets are being regularly patrolled, and that the fight against crime is being taken seriously.
