SAPS Shuts 178 000 Shebeens

Kate Lorimer MPL

Spokesperson on Community Safety

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng shut down 178 010 illegal shebeens in Gauteng in the previous financial year (2011 / 2012).

The multifaceted approach by the provincial SAPS as revealed in response to my written question is clearly yielding results and is highly effective.

It is however concerning that a conviction is not secured in a third of the cases, with 59 266 cases withdrawn from court.

I will submit a follow up question to Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko to determine why there is only a 66% conviction rate.

The illegal selling and distribution of alcohol has a severe negative impact on communities, especially women and children.

The police must do everything within their power to ensure that the people responsible for tearing communities apart are brought to book and receive the harshest punishment possible.
