The continued gang terror unleashed on the community of Mohlakeng in the West Rand highlights the urgent need for the reinstatement of anti-gang units.
The Star today reports on the recent tragic killing of a teenager attacked with stones and bottles by a youth gang. Members of the community have been held to ransom by gangs in the area, resulting in more than 12 deaths in the past few months. Many of the victims are attacked on their way to and from work.
It has been noted that gang-related crime and violence has been on the increase in Gauteng since the controversial disbanding of specialised police units by former National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi in 2006.
These units need to be reinstated in areas like Mohlakeng to urgently address the situation.
Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko should add her voice to the growing calls for the reinstatement of these specialised police units to free the people of Mohlakeng from the gang’s reign of terror.
