Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo must investigate reports that rotten and un-nutritious food is being served to patients at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
I have received numerous complaints about food at this hospital.
In September, the department denied in an official reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature that oil and fat is reused in the preparation of food there, but I requested MEC Papo to probe this further.
It appears that patients often get whatever food is available rather than food prepared in line with proper nutritional guidelines. Part of the problem is an inadequate budget and suppliers not being paid.
The hospital has sometimes run out of chicken and fish, and even bread because of unpaid suppliers. Portions are also often too small.
Patients need to receive a balanced diet as part of their recovery.
The latest allegations of poor food must be properly probed and steps taken to ensure nutritious food is always served to patients.
