Questions remain over patient numbers and funding for Gauteng hospitals

Mike Moriarty MPL

DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Finance

According to MEC Hope Papo’s response to a written question I submitted, the Gauteng Health Department cannot readily provide the DA with information on the number of patients admitted to public hospitals in the province, or the average estimated cost of caring for a single patient for a single day.

I asked the question to the MEC in light of the latest census figures which showed the continued rapid growth of the population of Gauteng and the pressure on public health facilities from within and beyond the borders of the province. This is basic information that a competently-run department should use in order to plan and budget correctly and render service efficiently. This information would be both useful and critical in any negotiation with National Treasury for more funds.

The DA will continue to pursue reliable and accurate information about the demands on provincial healthcare facilities, because as the DA prepares to govern Gauteng in 2014, we need to determine whether the current funding model for the province and Gauteng’s slice of the equitable share is sufficient for the nation’s most populous region.
