Anthony Benadie MPL
Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga
The DA passes its condolences to the families of the four learners who tragically lost their lives after being hit by a car along the Goba-Mbuzini road on Friday.
According to media reports, the speeding car ploughed into a group of 12 school children, killing two instantly, while two others died later in hospital. The children were on their way back from Zenzele Secondary School in Goba village in Nkomazi.
It is a travesty that the tragedy was caused by the reckless and irresponsible actions of one person, abruptly ending the hopes and dreams of four innocent young people and plunging their families into mourning.
The circumstances of this incident closely resemble those of the Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye street racing incident, and we echo the call of safety and security MEC Vusi Shongwe for a speedy conclusion to the investigation, and the harshest possible sanction.
The DA calls on traffic law enforcement officials and members of the SAPS to crack down on all reckless, negligent and street racing across Mpumalanga.
To this end, we will submit simultaneous formal parliamentary questions to both MECs for community safety security and liaison, as well as cooperative governance and traditional affairs, to determine the state of readiness and functionality of provincial and municipal traffic units, particularly the nature of operations after hours and on weekends.
Our province must develop a proactive strategy to reduce road deaths. We simply cannot allow the loss of a single life due to road negligence, and our traffic law enforcement agencies must be proactive in making Mpumalanga’s roads a safer place.
