The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has written to provincial Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, urging him and his department to come up with a plan to save Mc Cords Hospital, even if it means entering into a short term lease to take over the facility.
Mc Cords Hospital is the only convenient medical institution for a large number of eThekwini Metro residents, who are extremely alarmed by reports that the hospital is set to close its doors at the end of March.
The DA is well aware that McCord is not a provincial facility and so its closure is not a decision of the province. However, we believe that the department should have anticipated that the decision to withdraw the hospital’s subsidy might have the consequence of depriving these residents of a valuable health facility.
People are justifiably anxious and the department must show that it understands these concerns and will address them by making concrete plans to ensure health care continues in this area of the Metro.
