The telephone switchboard at the Free State Psychiatric Complex has been out of order since March 2011.
This continues to cause chaos for both staff and patients as relatives cannot phone to check up on the health of their loved ones.
Due to the nature of their mental condition, patients cannot be given cell phones.
Hospital Personnel are relying on their personal cell phones to make external calls at their own expense.
This hampers communication between patients and their relatives and makes it difficult for personnel to update relatives about the health status of the patients.
It is totally unacceptable that this public healthcare facility is being so neglected by the Free State Health Department. There should be an effective maintenance plan for all hospital equipment; the hospital needs to employ competent maintenance staff.
I wrote to Acting Health MEC Msebenzi Zwane this morning to inform him of the problem and urge him to immediately fix the switchboard.
