DA Gauteng Education Spokesperson
The DA in Gauteng demands that the Gauteng Education Department stops paying ghost teachers in the province. Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy has the responsibility to pay employees rendering services to the department.
It has come to my attention during my on-going school-readiness visits across the province that Dumezweni PrimarySchool in Diepkloof receives a pay slip for a ghost teacher.
A teacher known as S Mpofu has been receiving a salary from the department since October 2012. This teacher is not known at and never worked at Dumezweni Primary School.
The school is in need of an extra teacher as Grade 1 classes are overcrowded. One class has 56 learners instead of 40 as per the learner educator ratio, but someone is drawing a salary from the department every month without working for it.
The DA believes that corruption must be rooted out in our education system. It is wrong to pay people who aren’t delivering while there are qualified and unemployed teachers ready and available to do the work.
The department must stop paying this salary, launch an investigation into why S Mpofu is getting paid and find ways to recover the money.
